As the number of trunks and chests available has been rising in the past few years, the prices have also been falling simultaneously. Some of these cost less than 100, whereas the truly fancy ones can go up to a couple of thousand pounds. The type of material used, the additional features of the trunks, the amount of detailing on the chests - all these are factors that determine the total cost of the trunk. A wooden trunk built with inlay work will cost much more than a steel trunk built with casters and simpler locks.
Walnut was a much used wood type in years past for hope chests since it was so readily available. Now, this wood type can be fairly expensive for fully aged wood furniture. This has put Cherry and Oak in high demand. These hardwoods are easier to find in quality plank pieces which have been kiln dried. This is a much quicker way to 'age' wood. It can easily take a year or more to 'age' wood in the normal fashion.
The groups of people known as the fancy people would have been the ones that made blanket chests with inlay designs. The plain people rarely added embellishments of any type to hope chests, their homes or their clothing which is why they were referred to as the plain people. The fancy people not only added inlay to their wooden blanket chests, they also liked fully painted designs which had specific meanings for individual families.
