Many wood workers back then,as now, understood the importance of quality workmanship, which does include the use of the best wood available. Most hope chests made in America during the 1700's and 1800's were constructed with the hardwoods found growing in the surrounding areas of their towns. Walnut, Cherry and Oak were the prime choices along with an Eastern Pine which was also a hardwood type. Along the Eastern Seaboard, some wood artisans also used hardwoods imported from South America know for their beautiful 'inner glow' quality finish such as Mahogany.
This purity in form has resulted in one of the most beloved and enduring forms of furniture and hope chest styles, not only in America, but around the world. The Shaker Style has a timeless appeal with its simple line form which is not just simple, but is elegant as well. The simple staining brings out the beauty of the wood grain and the joinery styles. This furniture style represents the Shaker ideals of harmony and order within every aspect of their lives. This influenced the Shaker community to improve upon every design to achieve the form with the purest style. By creating all things surrounding them to be of the highest efficiency, the Shakers would then have more time to pursue religious endeavors.
Its that time of year again. Spring is in the air and its time for your annual spring cleaning. Its time to go through that junk drawer. You know which one Im talking about-the drawer that you put everything that youre not sure if youre going to use it again, but you dont want to throw it away-just in case. The one with the old twist ties, that single battery or those miscellaneous keys that surely go to something you see where Im going with this. If your junk drawer is like mine, you probably could dump the whole drawer in the garbage and not even miss anything in it. Junk has a way of reproducing itself into brand new junk.
The chest of drawers has long been a staple piece of bedroom furniture all over the world. This functional piece adds much needed storage while also providing some display area for photos and trinkets and the like. Over the years, however, this piece has fallen into a bit of rut, design-wise. Boring, cookie-cutter dressers and chests with five or six equally sized drawers have become the norm, and are what most of us have in our bedrooms. There are alternatives to these ho-hum pieces of bedroom furniture that can add some style and flair while still serving the purpose of storage. Here are a few of them.
