There has been a lot of confusion about the make-up of this material, its composition, methods of manufacture and the source of their color since then. Some of these inlays were found to be a type of allotrope of sulfur in 1977. Some years later another inlay type was found on eighteenth-century hope chest furniture, also ivory-colored, that did not contain sulfur.
When people look at heirloom hope chest furniture, they look at the wonderful styling and the care that it took to create these fine furniture pieces. They also look at the type of wood that was used for the construction of these blanket chests. The better the quality of wood used equals a longer survival time for these fine wood chests which have battled the elements. Hope chests made a few centuries ago would have endured the year round temperature changes and the many changes in humidity levels since homes back then were not always well insulated. These homes may not have been evenly heated as they are now either.
Cinnamon of either kind is the bark of the tree. The bark is peeled off and dried, curling into what are known as quills or ground into powder. This is where the similarity ends. Cassia quills are very thick curls, strong and sometimes even hard to break. It has a stronger taste, warmer and more potent. There is some very good quality cassia to be found these days, such as Korintje AA. A lovely spice to perk up anything you commonly make with cinnamon here.
