Storage space is at a premium in most homes, and often residents are looking for storage facilities that will not look out of place in a room, yet managing to enclose within them many items which need to be put away. Storage trunks and chests are perennial favourites among families, since they look good and are very versatile. A beautiful wooden storage chest in the living room can also become an improvised sitting place, with bolsters and cushions and a matching throw cover on it. A light colour storage chest can brighten up any dark room, and an antique look storage trunk with brass handles and locks can become the focal point of a simple room.
You can buy organizing trays or various styles of drawer dividers to organize desk drawers. Or you can use every day items from around your home. Small Tupperware, canning jars, ice cube trays, or even a muffin tin can be used to hold small office supplies in your drawers. When organizing paperwork loose papers can be corralled in shallow drawers with cookie sheets or the lids to shoe boxes.
Steel or aluminium metal trunks are also very durable, and are generally built with wheels. They are lightweight, easy to move around and long-lasting. These can also be painted to match the room dcor. Cane storage chests are also available, but these are generally purchased as part of an entire furniture set made of cane. Wooden and metal trunks are now being built with outer trimmings such as decorative handles, panels, antique look locks and copper hinges and handles.
The groups of people known as the fancy people would have been the ones that made blanket chests with inlay designs. The plain people rarely added embellishments of any type to hope chests, their homes or their clothing which is why they were referred to as the plain people. The fancy people not only added inlay to their wooden blanket chests, they also liked fully painted designs which had specific meanings for individual families.
